Kaizer Chiefs v Mamelodi Sundowns: Confirmed teams for Betway Premiership clash
League leaders Kaizer Chiefs face Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with both sides named for a major Betway Premiership meeting.
Kaizer Chiefs have selected Petersen in goal, with Monyane, Miguel, Kwinika and Moloisane forming the defensive line. Mthethwa and Maboe are included in midfield, while Ndlovu, Mmodi, Phili and Baartman complete the starting XI.
The Amakhosi have made an impressive beginning to the campaign and followed up their opening-day success by beating Sekhukhune United in midweek. That result gave them consecutive victories at the start of the season.
Their progress was checked last Sunday, however, when they were eliminated by Golden Arrows at the first hurdle of the MTN8. The defeat ended their hopes of competing for the early-season trophy.
Sundowns, the African champions, have named Williams as their goalkeeper. Mudau, Modiba, Grant Kekana and Johannes are set to feature in defence, with Aubass, Van Wyk and Allende selected in midfield. Leon, Mkhulise and Matthews will lead the attacking threat.
The match will be only Sundowns’ second league fixture of the campaign. They began their league programme in midweek with a dramatic last-gasp victory against TS Galaxy.
Before that result, the Brazilians defeated Polokwane City 3-2 after extra-time in the MTN8 quarter-finals. Sundowns have played one match fewer than their Soweto opponents so far this season.
The visitors have also held the upper hand in the recent league history between the clubs. Kaizer Chiefs have not beaten Mamelodi Sundowns in a league match since April 2021, when goals from Samir Nurkovic and Dumisani Zuma secured a comeback victory.
The balance appeared to shift last season, with both league meetings between the two heavyweight sides ending in draws.
Kick-off at FNB Stadium is scheduled for 15:00.
