Flick sees Rodri as answer to Barcelona’s experience gap

Hansi Flick has approved Barcelona’s move for Rodri because he believes the midfielder can help restore experience and authority to a dressing room increasingly dominated by younger players.

Barcelona’s squad has changed significantly in recent years, with academy graduates and younger players taking on a more prominent role in the first team. But the departures of Ronald Araujo and Robert Lewandowski this summer have removed two senior figures who carried considerable influence within the group.

Flick is now short of players able to assume responsibility, command respect and provide leadership inside the dressing room. According to Spanish newspaper Sport, the German coach asked Barcelona to recruit players with the experience and personality needed to address that weakness.

That request was one of the main reasons behind Flick’s approval of a deal for Rodri.

The Barcelona manager appreciates what Rodri could offer technically and in terms of his quality on the pitch. However, the midfielder’s experience and leadership are believed to be even more important to Flick as he assesses the needs of his squad.

With youth now a defining feature of Barcelona’s dressing room, Flick wants a player capable of making a decisive contribution in the most difficult and important moments of the campaign. That need is particularly significant in the UEFA Champions League and during the decisive stages of the season.

Rodri could help fill at least part of the leadership void that has emerged at the club. His presence would provide Barcelona with an experienced voice as well as a player capable of influencing matches at the highest level.

At present, Wojciech Szczesny is the only member of Barcelona’s squad aged over 30. The goalkeeper has a positive attitude and is regarded as someone who supports the younger players, but Sport reports that he does not possess the same commanding dressing-room personality that Ronald Araujo and Robert Lewandowski brought to the group.

Joao Cancelo is the only other player who could join Barcelona’s over-30s group if his return to the club is completed.

There will also be changes to the club’s captaincy structure following the departures of Ronald Araujo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, while Frenkie de Jong’s long-term injury has further altered the situation.

Raphinha is expected to become Barcelona’s first captain, with Pedri set to serve as vice-captain. Gavi and Eric Garcia could also move into the club’s leadership group behind them.

Flick’s support for Rodri therefore reflects more than the midfielder’s ability to control games. The manager is also seeking the experience, authority and personality he believes Barcelona need to complement their younger squad and compete effectively when the pressure is greatest.
