Istanbul to host 2027 Spanish Super Cup under Riyadh Season sponsorship

The 2027 Spanish Super Cup will be played in Istanbul and sponsored by Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season, General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Alalshikh has announced.

The tournament will take place at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, although no dates have yet been confirmed.

Reports indicate that the Spanish Football Federation has also decided to move the competition from its traditional slot at the beginning of January to the start of February. The change is expected to accommodate the Asian Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia from 7 January to 5 February.

Barcelona will enter the 2027 Spanish Super Cup as Spanish league champions. They will be joined by Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad, league runners-up Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid, who finished as runners-up in the cup competition.

The four-team tournament will be staged at a venue with a significant European pedigree. The Ataturk Olympic Stadium previously hosted the UEFA Champions League final in 2005 and again in 2023.

The decision means Turkey will become only the third country outside Spain to host the Spanish Super Cup, following Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has been the tournament’s host in recent years, but the Saudi Arabian Football Federation apologised for being unable to stage the next edition. The country’s hosting plans were affected by the Asian Cup, with the tournament scheduled to run during the period ordinarily allocated to the Spanish Super Cup.

It will also be the first time since 2020 that the competition has not been held in Saudi Arabia, apart from the 2021 edition, which was played at La Cartuja Stadium.

Barcelona are the current holders and have won the last two editions of the Spanish Super Cup. In the most recent final, they defeated Real Madrid 3-2, while their 2025 triumph came with a 5-2 victory over the same opponents.

The 2027 competition will therefore bring together four of Spain’s leading clubs in Istanbul, with Barcelona seeking to retain the trophy and Real Madrid aiming to reclaim it. Real Sociedad will compete as Copa del Rey holders, while Atletico de Madrid will complete the line-up after finishing as runners-up in that competition.

The announcement links the tournament’s next staging to Riyadh Season, a major Saudi entertainment initiative, while moving the event to a new international venue. Although the exact match schedule remains undecided, the expected shift to early February would represent a change to the competition’s recent calendar.
