Aston Villa victory keeps Luis Enrique’s trophy habit alive at Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain began the new season with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, extending Luis Enrique’s extraordinary record in major finals.

The result gave the French club an early trophy and further strengthened the standing of a manager who has made a habit of delivering when the stakes are highest. According to French network RMC, Enrique has now won 17 of the 20 finals in which he has managed.

His sequence of final appearances began on 30 May 2015, when he led Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final. During his two years in charge at Camp Nou, Enrique established himself as a dominant force in domestic and European football, guiding Barcelona to seven trophies, including the UEFA Champions League.

The only final he lost during his Barcelona tenure also came against Athletic Club. Barcelona were beaten 4-0 in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana in August 2015 before drawing the return match 1-1.

Enrique later reached the 2021 UEFA Nations League final with Spain. However, his side lost 2-1 to France on 10 October of that year. That defeat remains one of the few setbacks in a final during a managerial career otherwise marked by regular success.

PSG success continues

Enrique’s record with Paris Saint-Germain has continued in the same direction. Since taking charge of the club, he has managed 11 finals and won 10 of them.

His only defeat with PSG came in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, when Chelsea won 3-0 on 13 July 2025. Since then, the Paris club have returned to winning ways in every final they have contested.

PSG beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup, overcame Flamengo in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and defeated Marseille in the Trophee des Champions. They then beat Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final before adding Aston Villa to their list of final victims in the 2026 UEFA Super Cup.

The latest success came as Enrique entered his fourth season as Paris Saint-Germain manager, giving him another opportunity to enhance one of the most striking records of his career.
