‘We are so sorry’ – Christy Ucheibe apologises as Super Falcons miss direct World Cup spot

Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe has apologised to Nigerians after Nigeria’s failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons’ hopes of booking a direct place at the global tournament were dealt a major blow after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The result ended Nigeria’s campaign in the continental competition and denied them the opportunity to secure one of the automatic World Cup qualification places available through their progress at the tournament.

With their direct route now closed, the Super Falcons must navigate the play-off system if they are to maintain their record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ucheibe admitted the disappointment surrounding the setback but insisted the players have already shifted their attention towards the opportunity that remains.

“We’re just going to focus on the next game. For the playoffs, we will do our best to ensure that we qualify for the World Cup,” she told reporters in the mixed zone.

The midfielder also used the opportunity to apologise to Nigerians, acknowledging the frustration caused by the team’s failure to achieve direct qualification.

The Super Falcons entered the tournament with high expectations but saw their hopes of progressing further collapse against Cameroon, leaving the players with the responsibility of finding another way to the World Cup.

Ucheibe accepted that the disappointment would be felt by supporters across Nigeria and admitted that the team understands the significance of the setback.

“We are so sorry. We want to apologize to you guys. We know this is the first time we are not qualifying for the World Cup directly. We just want to say we are sorry,” she said.

Her apology came as the Super Falcons prepared to regroup for another decisive assignment, with their World Cup ambitions still alive despite the quarter-final exit.

Nigeria will now face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a crucial 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off on Thursday, August 13, in Casablanca, Morocco.

The encounter represents the Super Falcons’ next opportunity to keep their World Cup campaign on track and avoid missing out on the tournament.

Ucheibe has called on her teammates to respond positively to the disappointment in Morocco, with the midfielder insisting that the players remain committed to securing qualification.

“We promise to do our best in the next game for us to be able to qualify for the World Cup in 2027,” she concluded.
