Marseille target Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill after World Cup displays

Marseille are monitoring Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill after his impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup, according to French publication Foot Mercato.

The Ligue 1 club are working to reduce their wage bill but remain active in assessing possible options in the transfer market. Goalkeeper is one position Marseille are examining as they seek to strengthen their squad while also cutting costs.

Guillaume Restes, the Toulouse goalkeeper, remains Marseille’s main target in the position, as previously reported by FilGoal. However, Foot Mercato has identified another player under consideration by the French club: Gill, who plays for San Lorenzo.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper’s situation is attracting Marseille’s attention, particularly because he is under contract with San Lorenzo until 2027. Gill made 26 appearances for the Argentine club in all competitions last season.

His form also earned him recognition with Paraguay, for whom he produced an impressive display during the country’s involvement at the 2026 World Cup. That tournament performance has contributed to the interest surrounding him and has brought him into Marseille’s recruitment discussions alongside Restes.

While the club continue their search for a new goalkeeper, Marseille are also making progress in negotiations with Geoffrey de Lange.

The French side are therefore considering more than one option for the position as they attempt to balance their sporting plans with the need to reduce expenditure. Restes is currently viewed as the priority, but Gill has emerged as an alternative target after his strong season with San Lorenzo and his appearance for Paraguay at the World Cup.

Gill’s contract situation means Marseille would have to examine the possibility of reaching an agreement with San Lorenzo, with the goalkeeper tied to the club until 2027. No further details of a potential transfer have been reported.

The interest in Gill comes as Marseille continue to shape their plans for the next stage of the transfer window. Their pursuit of a goalkeeper is taking place alongside ongoing talks for de Lange, while Restes remains the leading name previously associated with the club.

Foot Mercato’s report adds Gill to that shortlist and underlines Marseille’s continued interest in the Paraguay international following his World Cup performance.
