Benfica teenager Daniel Banjaqui attracts interest from leading European clubs

At 18, Daniel Banjaqui is attracting attention from several of Europe’s biggest clubs as he establishes himself as one of the promising young defenders in Benfica’s system.

The Portuguese right-back, who was developed by Benfica and remains under contract with the Lisbon club until 2031, is being monitored by sides from England, Italy, Spain and Germany. He also has the option of continuing his development in Portugal.

Premier League interest

Newcastle and Manchester United are following Banjaqui, according to journalist Ekrem Konur, while Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with the defender in recent reports.

A move to England would give Banjaqui the chance to test himself in a demanding competition against some of the game’s leading attackers. However, competition for places at those clubs could make his adaptation difficult.

Any transfer would therefore need to offer him a clear sporting plan, including realistic opportunities to develop and play regularly.

Serie A presents another route

Inter Milan and Juventus are reported to be interested in the Portuguese player of Bissau-Guinean origin, while AS Roma are also said to be monitoring his progress.

According to TuttoJuve, Juventus view Banjaqui as a long-term option. A move to Serie A could expose him to the tactical demands of Italian football, particularly in defensive organisation.

At his age, the league could help him improve his positioning, game-reading and consistency before he takes on a more prominent role.

Spanish clubs also watching

FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are among the Spanish clubs associated with Banjaqui.

LaLiga could suit a defender who would be expected to contribute to build-up play, with technical ability and quality distribution highly valued in the competition. Barcelona may be attracted by his potential, while Atletico Madrid could provide a demanding environment in which to sharpen his defensive qualities.

There has been no official announcement, however, and the reports should be treated with caution. A move to Spain would need to provide Banjaqui with a clear pathway through the different stages of his development.

Bundesliga opportunity

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have also been mentioned as clubs following the situation of the Benfica youngster.

The intensity of German football and its emphasis on rapid transitions could help Banjaqui develop physically and improve his ability to support attacks. But reported interest does not mean negotiations have begun.

The priority for the teenager would be joining a club able to give him an appropriate development programme without putting his progress at risk.

Staying at Benfica

The most immediate option may be for Banjaqui to remain with Benfica. His contract runs until 2031 and includes a reported release clause of 80 million euros, leaving the Lisbon club in a strong contractual position.

Continuing in Portugal would allow him to become more accustomed to senior football, gain playing time and mature before considering a future move abroad. Benfica may also prefer to retain him while his potential continues to grow.

Among the five possible routes, staying at the club could be the most cautious choice in the short term, provided Banjaqui is offered an attractive sporting role.

No destination is guaranteed. His playing time, development and Benfica’s financial demands are likely to shape any decision, with the quality of his next sporting project potentially as important as the value of a possible transfer.
