Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu apologises to Nigerians after WAFCON quarter-final defeat

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has apologised to Nigerians and taken full responsibility following the team’s disappointing quarter-final defeat at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria’s hopes of defending their continental title suffered a major setback after the Super Falcons failed to secure a place in the semi-finals, while the defeat also denied them the opportunity to seal direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons had entered the tournament with high expectations after their impressive performances in recent editions of the competition, but their campaign has now been pushed into the playoff route for a place at next year’s global tournament.

Speaking after the defeat, Madugu expressed his disappointment and apologised to Nigerians for failing to deliver the result that would have secured the team’s direct qualification for the World Cup.

The coach, however, defended the commitment and effort of his players, insisting that the squad gave everything on the pitch despite falling short of their objective.

“I want to apologise to Nigerians over the team’s inability to win today’s game that would have qualified the team for the World Cup. The ladies did their best. We apologise and I take full responsibility for this disappointment. We still have a second chance and we will see what comes out of it.”

Madugu acknowledged the frustration surrounding the result but urged Nigerians to continue supporting the team as they prepare for another opportunity to achieve their World Cup ambition.

The Super Falcons now have to quickly recover from the disappointment and shift their attention towards the playoff, where they will have another chance to secure their place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Nigerian coach stressed that the team remains determined to make the most of the second opportunity and avoid allowing the quarter-final setback to derail their ultimate objective.

“We have a second chance, and we will give it our all to make sure we do not disappoint and go the same way the men did. We will do all we can to make sure we go through the playoff.”

The comments underline the importance of the upcoming playoff for Nigeria, with the Super Falcons now facing a decisive battle for World Cup qualification.

Nigeria will face South Africa in the crucial playoff, with a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake.

Madugu and his technical team will now have to regroup the players, address the shortcomings from the quarter-final defeat and ensure the team is mentally and physically prepared for the decisive encounter.
