Bernardo Silva stakes claim to reshape Real Madrid’s midfield under Mourinho

Bernardo Silva has made an encouraging first impression at Real Madrid and could take on a more influential role in Jose Mourinho’s midfield than originally expected, despite not yet being fully fit.

The Portuguese midfielder made his first appearance for the club against Ferencvarosi TC after only five days of training with his new team-mates. Even so, Silva produced an impressive 45-minute display, showing composure in possession and an ability to move intelligently through the centre of the pitch.

His arrival could become particularly important for Mourinho after Real Madrid failed to sign Rodri. Spanish newspaper Marca believes Silva has the qualities required to help the team progress the ball, dictate the tempo of matches and impose greater structure on the midfield.

Those responsibilities would represent a significant change from the role Silva has generally occupied throughout his career. Although he is not a conventional defensive midfielder, his reading of the game, close control and judgement over when to release the ball could allow him to become one of Real Madrid’s principal organisers next season.

Real Madrid are seeking a player capable of bringing calm and control to the middle of the pitch. Silva’s first outing suggested that he may be able to provide both, while also contributing to the construction of attacks and helping coordinate the team’s movement during periods of possession.

The midfielder’s influence was not limited to his attacking work. His presence gave Real Madrid greater stability when they had the ball and helped the side maintain a clearer shape in midfield.

Silva also received a strong endorsement from team-mate and captain Federico Valverde. The Uruguay international described him as a “magician” and praised his character, saying he had integrated quickly into the squad and adapted well to his new colleagues.

Marca says Silva may now be asked to perform a different function from the one associated with much of his career. Rather than operating primarily as an attacking creator, he could become a central figure in controlling matches and setting the rhythm from deeper areas.

Mourinho will, however, need to manage Silva’s playing time carefully. The Portuguese player is now over 30, and Real Madrid will want to preserve his fitness and ensure he remains available throughout the campaign.

Mourinho currently has Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva available for midfield roles. Thiago Pitarch is continuing his recovery, adding another factor to the manager’s selection decisions.

That makes rotation in midfield unavoidable. Silva nevertheless appears to have an important opportunity to establish himself as one of Real Madrid’s key players, particularly if he can offer the composure and organisation the team has lacked since the departure of Luka Modric.

His debut came before he had completed a full preparation programme with the squad, meaning Mourinho may expect further improvement as Silva becomes better accustomed to his team-mates and the demands of the system. Yet the early signs have already raised the possibility that the new signing could provide the order and control Real Madrid need.
