Barcelona’s Julian Alvarez pursuit reaches pivotal stage

Julian Alvarez reports for pre-season training with Atletico de Madrid on Monday, with the Argentina forward hoping his return will persuade the club to open negotiations over a possible move to Barcelona.

Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to join Barcelona during the World Cup. However, Atletico have consistently maintained that they do not intend to allow the 27-year-old to leave this summer.

According to a report by SPORT, the situation has produced considerable noise since the World Cup but little tangible progress. Atletico’s only formal response to Barcelona’s approach was a complaint to FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation, alleging that the Catalan club had negotiated with a player who remained under contract during a protected period.

The Madrid club have also repeatedly made their position clear through public comments from chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and president Enrique Cerezo. Both have stressed that Atletico will not sanction Alvarez’s departure during the current transfer window.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone reinforced that stance at the end of the week, saying: “The situation is clear, the club has made a decision.”

Alvarez’s return to the club’s preparations therefore represents an important moment in a transfer saga that Barcelona have approached with caution. The forward’s arrival could either lead to a change in Atletico’s position or underline the difficulty Barcelona face in trying to negotiate a deal.

Barcelona responded to Alvarez’s public stance by submitting an initial offer and openly declaring their interest in signing him. The club has since remained largely silent over recent weeks, choosing not to engage in a public exchange with Atletico.

That restraint reflects Barcelona’s understanding that the proposed transfer would be extremely difficult to complete. The club has handled each stage of its pursuit carefully, avoiding statements that could further complicate discussions with Atletico or intensify the dispute surrounding the approach.

One of the few clear moves came when sporting director Deco travelled to Madrid to meet Alvarez’s representative. The meeting was identified by journalists from SPORT and Jijantes, but Barcelona did not wish to turn the visit into a wider public confrontation.

Apart from that meeting, the Catalan club has avoided further arguments or an exchange of declarations with Atletico. Its approach has been to maintain its interest while limiting public pressure, despite Alvarez having already made his preference known.

The coming week will now provide a clearer indication of whether the two clubs can move towards formal negotiations. Alvarez’s return to Atletico’s pre-season programme gives the Madrid side an opportunity to reaffirm its position directly, while Barcelona must decide whether its initial proposal can create an opening in a case that Atletico have so far treated as closed.
