Barcelona prepare renewed move for Racing Santander teenager Sergio Martinez

Barcelona are preparing a fresh attempt to sign Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Martinez after failing to reach an agreement for the 19-year-old in January, with Real Madrid and other European clubs also monitoring the Spain Under-19 international.

The Catalan club view Martinez as a signing for Barca Atletic initially, with the longer-term aim of developing him into a first-team player. However, negotiations are expected to be difficult after Racing Santander strengthened the teenager’s contractual position late last year.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Racing Santander extended Martinez’s contract in November until 2029. His previous agreement had been due to expire in 2027, while the club also increased his release clause to 3m euros.

The decision underlines the Cantabrian side’s determination to retain one of the most promising young players in its academy. Racing remain open to a sale for the midfielder, who comes from Laredo, but they are demanding a substantial percentage of any future transfer fee as part of the proposed deal.

That condition has added to the complexity of discussions between the clubs. Barcelona are also negotiating with Racing Santander over fellow player Jorge Salinas, although Racing are insisting that his 16m-euro release clause is paid in full.

Reports suggest Barcelona currently hold the advantage over Real Madrid in the race for Martinez. Real Madrid have shown an interest in the midfielder but have not made an offer as advanced or concrete as the one being considered by Barcelona. A third European club is also understood to be following developments closely.

Martinez has already gained valuable senior experience despite his age. He played 13 matches for Racing Santander’s first team last season, featuring 10 times in the second division and three times in the Copa del Rey. He also made 18 appearances for the reserve side after stepping up from the youth ranks.

The 1.85m midfielder is known for his competitive approach and willingness to commit to physical challenges. He has also attracted praise for his control of the ball and his tactical positioning.

Racing Santander have changed his role during his development. Martinez initially operated as an attacking midfielder but has increasingly been used as a defensive midfielder, allowing him to concentrate on improving the defensive side of his game.

For Barca Atletic, his arrival would provide an important addition as the reserve team prepares for changes to its squad. Brian Farinas and Tommy Marquez are both reaching the end of their spells with the second team. Farinas is expected to move into Barcelona’s first-team set-up, while Marquez will have to look for a way out.

That situation would create room for new players, and Barcelona see Martinez as a potential option to refresh the reserve squad while continuing to monitor his progress towards senior football.
