Paris Saint-Germain held by Manchester United in final warm-up before European Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United in their final friendly before Wednesday’s European Super Cup meeting with Aston Villa.

Ibrahim Mbaye gave Paris Saint-Germain an early lead, but Manchester United responded through Brian Mbeumo as both sides continued their preparations for the new season.

Paris Saint-Germain took only two minutes to move in front. Mbaye finished from a cross delivered by Drew Fernandez, putting the French side ahead at the start of the match.

Manchester United levelled in the 32nd minute when Mbeumo converted with a shot after Amad Diallo had supplied the cross.

The result ended Paris Saint-Germain’s limited pre-season schedule. They have played just two matches ahead of the new campaign, losing 3-0 to Spanish side Mallorca before drawing with Manchester United.

Their next fixture will be a competitive one, with Paris Saint-Germain facing Aston Villa in the European Super Cup on Wednesday. They will then meet Lens in the French Super Cup before the start of the new season.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have now completed four pre-season matches and still have two more fixtures to play before their campaign begins.

They began their preparations with a 1-0 defeat by Wrexham. Ruben Amorim’s side then responded with a 5-0 victory over Rosenborg and followed that result with a 2-1 win against Atletico de Madrid.

The draw with Paris Saint-Germain leaves Manchester United unbeaten in their past three friendlies. Their remaining pre-season games will be against Leeds United and Milan.

The meeting with Paris Saint-Germain was therefore the French club’s final opportunity to build match sharpness before their European Super Cup contest. The early goal from Mbaye provided an encouraging start, but Mbeumo’s equaliser ensured Manchester United avoided defeat in a game that served as the final preparation for the French side.

Paris Saint-Germain will now turn their attention to Aston Villa, while Manchester United continue their build-up with two further friendlies still to come.
