Matt Piper praises Caleb Okoli for Leicester’s Carabao Cup winner

Former Leicester City winger Matt Piper has praised Caleb Okoli after the defender’s decisive header sent the Foxes into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Northampton Town.

Okoli, who is eligible to represent Nigeria, made the difference at the King Power Stadium by rising highest to meet Luke Thomas’ corner in the 15th minute and powering his header beyond the Northampton defence.

The early breakthrough provided Leicester with the platform they needed to negotiate a difficult cup tie, with Okoli then playing a key role at the other end as the Foxes protected their narrow advantage.

Speaking on BBC Radio, Piper singled out Leicester’s ability to threaten from a set-piece, an area he believes has been lacking in recent seasons.

“It is nice to see that the first goal is from a corner, as we haven’t seen many set piece goals in recent years,” Piper said.

“It has been a downfall of us in previous seasons, and so it is great to see so early on.”

Okoli combines goal with defensive authority

The goal was only part of Okoli’s contribution as the centre-back delivered an assured display to help Leicester secure their first clean sheet of the campaign.

The Nigerian-eligible defender won all of his ground duels and complemented his aerial presence with four recoveries, three clearances and one interception.

His defensive solidity proved particularly important as Northampton pushed for a way back into the contest, with Leicester ultimately holding firm to book their place in the next round.

For Okoli, the performance represents another opportunity to establish himself as an important figure in Leicester’s defence as the club looks to navigate the season with the ambition of returning to the Championship.

Okoli’s combination of attacking and defensive contributions made him one of the standout performers on a night when Leicester had to work hard for their progression.
