Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli emerges as unexpected Real Madrid midfield option

Real Madrid are considering a move for Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli after their attempts to sign Rodri have stalled, with the Manchester City midfielder reportedly edging closer to a transfer to Barcelona.

Locatelli was not previously regarded as one of Real Madrid’s expected targets during the current transfer window. However, the uncertainty surrounding Rodri’s future has prompted the Spanish club to examine alternative options as they look to strengthen their midfield.

According to Football Italia, Locatelli is among the players being assessed by Real Madrid as they review their recruitment plans. The report also claims that Jose Mourinho views the Juventus midfielder as a possible option for reinforcing the centre of the pitch.

A move for Locatelli would represent an unexpected change of direction for Real Madrid. The Italy international is an important member of the Juventus squad and wears the captain’s armband, making the prospect of his departure a particularly significant one for the Turin club.

The possibility has already prompted debate among Juventus supporters, who remain divided over Locatelli’s performances and his overall importance to the team.

Juventus, meanwhile, could welcome interest in one of their established players as they seek to generate the funds needed for further activity in the transfer market. The Italian club want to improve their midfield in the coming period, but recognise that continued spending will require income from player sales.

Juventus have already signed Randal Kolo Muani and Karim Alajbegovic, increasing the need to strike a balance between strengthening the squad and moving on some members of the current group. If a suitable offer arrives, Locatelli could therefore become one of the players considered for sale.

The 27-year-old joined Juventus in 2021 and has made 230 appearances for the club. He has also regained his place in the Italy national team.

Locatelli’s market value is estimated at between 25m and 30m euros, although his contract situation gives Juventus a strong negotiating position. He extended his agreement with the club until 2030 in April, meaning Juventus are under no immediate pressure to accept a low offer.

Real Madrid would therefore need to make a convincing proposal if they decide to pursue the midfielder. Any approach would also have to persuade Juventus to part with their captain despite his long-term commitment to the club.

Locatelli is not the only Juventus midfielder whose future is uncertain during the current transfer window. Teun Koopmeiners is one of the leading names linked with a possible exit after failing to consistently produce the level expected since arriving in a deal worth more than 50m euros.

Newcastle United have shown serious interest in Koopmeiners, whose current market value is estimated at about 30m euros. His sale is consequently one of the options under consideration by the Juventus hierarchy.

Fabio Miretti has also been linked with a departure, with Lazio studying the possibility of signing him on loan with an option to buy.

Elsewhere, Napoli, managed by Massimiliano Allegri, remain interested in Juventus defender Federico Gatti. The range of speculation underlines the scale of the potential changes facing the squad this summer.

Juventus want to reinforce their team, but may have to sacrifice some of their current players to finance new arrivals. If Real Madrid decide to act decisively, Locatelli could find himself making a remarkable transition from Juventus captain to a new midfield target for the Spanish club.
