‘I know the magnitude’ – Brandon Petersen ready to carry Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes as captain

Brandon Petersen has acknowledged the enormous responsibility that comes with captaining Kaizer Chiefs, insisting he understands the weight of expectations as the club attempts to restore its former glory.

The goalkeeper was handed the Amakhosi armband as the Soweto giants begin a new chapter under coach Fernando da Cruz, with Petersen determined to lead by example both on and off the pitch.

Chiefs made a positive start to the new campaign after defeating newly promoted Kruger United 3-1 in their opening league fixture last weekend. Their attention now turns to the MTN8 quarterfinals, where they host Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Ahead of the cup encounter, Petersen reflected on the honour of becoming the latest player entrusted with leading one of Africa’s most decorated clubs.

“It is an honour and privilege to be given the armband and lead a club with such a rich history,” he said.

‘They have seen something in you’

The 30-year-old is aware that captaining Chiefs comes with expectations unlike many other roles in football, given the club’s history and passionate supporters.

However, Petersen believes the key to handling the pressure is not trying to imitate previous leaders but remaining authentic while serving the team’s interests.

“All the captains that have come before are greats and legends of the game. What is important for me is not to try and change who I am.”

The shot-stopper added that leadership is about maintaining the qualities that earned him the opportunity in the first place.

“I have always believed that when people put you in leadership positions, it’s not for you to change but you must remain true to yourself because they have seen something in you.”

For Petersen, success as captain will not be measured by personal recognition but by the collective progress of the team.

“What is important is the team and what I can offer towards the success of the team. It is important to lead by example and that is the main thing for me. I know the magnitude of being the captain for Chiefs.”

New signings raise expectations at Naturena

Chiefs have undergone significant squad changes ahead of the season as they aim to compete on multiple fronts, including domestic competitions and the CAF Confederation Cup.

The club has strengthened its squad with the additions of Thabo Moloisane, Renaldo Leaner, Adolf Mtasingwa, Langelihle Phili, Faiz Abrahams and permanent signing Khanyisa Mayo.

Petersen believes the new arrivals have brought quality and competition to the team while praising their potential to contribute to the club’s ambitions.

“We have signed phenomenal players. It is an excellent opportunity for them to be part of a great institution like Kaizer Chiefs.”

Among the new recruits, Petersen singled out Phili as a player capable of making a major impact after impressing during his time at Stellenbosch FC.

“There has been a lot of hype around Phili. He did well at Stellenbosch and gave us headaches whenever we played against them. He is going to add a lot of value for us.”

The Chiefs captain highlighted the youngster’s technical qualities and believes the club’s environment will help him continue developing.

“He is good when it comes to one-on-one, agility and strength. His football knowledge is good and it is important for us to nurture that and make sure he brings the best week in and week out.”
