Lorient face fight to keep Ghana defender Nathaniel Adjei

Lorient are facing growing pressure to keep Nathaniel Adjei, with Strasbourg, Sunderland, Hull City and FC Copenhagen all competing for the 23-year-old centre-back.

Interest from Spanish clubs has cooled, but the defender’s potential departure remains a developing story this summer. Hull City have already opened early discussions, while the other three clubs are assessing their options before deciding whether to make formal approaches.

Lorient are understood to be reluctant to sell Adjei, who has become an important part of their defensive plans. The club’s coaching staff were impressed by his pre-season preparations and want him to establish himself as one of the team’s main defensive figures for the coming campaign.

Adjei, a Ghana international, has recovered from the injury that disrupted his start to life in France. Although Lorient hope to retain him, he is not ruling out a move if an attractive opportunity emerges.

The player’s representatives are continuing to examine the different possibilities available to him before deciding which would offer the best outcome. Meanwhile, Lorient’s board remains hopeful that it can keep a defender who is now considered indispensable in the team’s back line.

Adjei is valued at €1.5m and currently earns an annual salary of €910,000, equivalent to 591,500,000 FCFA. The Teshie-born defender remains under contract in France until 2028.

Hull City are the only one of the four interested clubs to have initiated discussions at this stage. Strasbourg, Sunderland and FC Copenhagen have yet to make official moves, although their interest could lead to further developments during the summer transfer window.

The uncertainty comes shortly before Lorient begin their French league campaign against OGC Nice. Ahead of that fixture, the published betting odds list Lorient at 3.20 to win, a draw at 3.00 and an OGC Nice victory at 1.76.

For now, Lorient’s preference is clear: the club wants Adjei to remain and play a central role in the season ahead. The defender’s camp, however, is weighing up the interest from four clubs, leaving his future unresolved as the new campaign approaches.
