Everton recruit Christian Nørgaard after midfielder’s solitary Arsenal season

Everton have officially signed Denmark midfielder Christian Nørgaard from Arsenal, with the Premier League club confirming the deal on Wednesday without disclosing its financial terms.

Nørgaard has agreed a two-year contract at Everton, which will keep him at the Merseyside club until the summer of 2028. English media reports have estimated the transfer fee at about £7m.

The 32-year-old defensive midfielder leaves Arsenal after only one season with the London club. He joined the Gunners from Brentford in the summer of 2025 in a deal worth an initial £10m, with the eventual cost capable of rising to £15m through bonuses.

Nørgaard made 20 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions during the 2025-26 campaign, but was unable to establish himself as a regular starter in Mikel Arteta’s side. He did, however, finish the season as part of the squad that won the Premier League title.

At Everton, Nørgaard brings considerable experience in English football and international leadership. He has won 41 caps for Denmark and has worn the national team’s captain’s armband on several occasions.

The midfielder built his reputation during a lengthy spell with Brentford before moving to Arsenal. He played 196 matches for the club, helped them secure promotion to the Premier League and later became one of their most important players.

He also captained Brentford, having developed into a central figure during the club’s rise through the English football system.

Everton’s announcement completes an unusually brief chapter of Nørgaard’s career at Arsenal. His two-year agreement with the Gunners included an option to extend for a further season, but he has instead moved on after one campaign.

The transfer gives Everton a player familiar with the demands of the Premier League, as well as a midfielder with international experience and a record of leadership at club and country level.
