Egypt FA opens talks to renew Hossam Hassan’s contract after World Cup progress
The Egyptian Football Association has begun discussions with national team manager Hossam Hassan over a new contract after Egypt reached the last 16 of the World Cup.
A meeting was held between Egypt FA president Hany Abou Rida and Hassan’s coaching staff on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, as the governing body moves to formalise plans for the manager and his technical team to remain in charge.
The association published a photograph on its Facebook account showing Abou Rida taking part in the meeting to discuss the renewal of the contracts of twins Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan. Egypt FA vice-president Khaled El-Dirandaly, board member Hamada El-Sharbeni and national team administrative director Walid Badr were also present.
The Egyptian Football Association had previously announced the formation of a committee to determine the terms of Hossam Hassan’s proposed contract extension as Egypt manager.
According to information obtained by FilGoal.com, the committee is expected to discuss the details of the new agreement with Hassan, including the composition of his coaching staff and revised salaries. The group will also consider plans for Egypt’s two friendly matches during the next international break.
Hassan was appointed Egypt manager in February 2024 and began his tenure the following month, when the national side played New Zealand.
Since then, the former striker has led Egypt in 35 matches, recording 19 wins, 10 draws and five defeats.
Egypt finished second in Group Seven of the World Cup with five points, behind Belgium on points difference. During the group stage, the Pharaohs drew with Belgium and Iran, while their only victory came against New Zealand in a 3-1 win.
Egypt then beat Australia on penalties in the round of 32 before losing to defending champions Argentina in the last 16.
The progress to the knockout stages has strengthened the Football Association’s desire to retain Hassan and his staff. Wednesday’s meeting represents the latest step in negotiations, with the final terms of the proposed renewal still to be settled.
Hossam Hassan, widely known as “El-Amid”, took charge with the task of leading a new phase for the national team. His record since March 2024 includes a substantial number of victories, although the association and its appointed committee must now agree the financial and technical details before the renewal can be completed.
