Sofiane Boufal weighs European options after Esperance Sportive de Tunis approach

Sofiane Boufal has rejected an offer from Esperance Sportive de Tunis and opted to continue his career in Europe, despite the Tunisian club being prepared to meet his financial demands.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis had identified the Morocco international as a target while seeking a winger to strengthen the left side of their attack. The club was willing to offer Boufal the salary he wanted in an attempt to persuade him to move to Tunisia.

However, Radio Mars reported that the 32-year-old had decided against the proposed transfer. The report said Boufal “preferred to continue his career in European football despite receiving an attractive offer from the Tunisian club”.

Boufal is currently a free agent following the end of his contract with French club Le Havre. His spell there was brief, and he was reportedly earning about €35,000 a month, equivalent to approximately €420,000 per year.

The former Morocco international is now considering the European offers available to him before deciding on his next club. His current market value is estimated at around €1.8m.

Boufal remains one of the most recognisable members of the Morocco side that made history at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He played a significant role in the Atlas Lions’ run to the semi-finals, the best performance by an African nation in the history of the World Cup.

At international level, Boufal has won 47 caps for Morocco and scored eight goals. His most recent appearance for the national team came against Burundi last May.

Despite that involvement, he was not included in Morocco’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis’ interest reflected the club’s desire to add experience and attacking quality on the left flank, but its willingness to satisfy Boufal’s financial requirements was not enough to change his preference for remaining in European football.

Boufal will therefore continue assessing the proposals before him as he looks for his next destination. With his international experience, record of 47 appearances for Morocco and role in the team’s historic 2022 campaign, he remains available to clubs seeking an experienced attacking player.

The decision also leaves Esperance Sportive de Tunis needing to continue its search for a left-sided winger. The club had made Boufal one of its options for the position, but the player’s choice means the proposed move will not go ahead.
