Herve Renard appointed Cote d’Ivoire boss for return to former champions

Herve Renard has been appointed head coach of Cote d’Ivoire, returning to the national team more than a decade after leading the Elephants to the Africa Cup of Nations title.

The Frenchman previously managed Cote d’Ivoire from June 2014 until May 2015, guiding them to victory at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. His new appointment marks the third time in his managerial career that he has returned to lead a national side he had previously coached.

Renard previously had two spells in charge of Zambia, from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2011 to 2013. He also managed Saudi Arabia between 2019 and 2023 before returning for a second spell from 2024 to 2026.

The Ivorian Football Federation confirmed Renard’s appointment on Tuesday. In an official statement, it said the 57-year-old would take charge of the team for the next phase of its development as Cote d’Ivoire prepares for forthcoming continental and international commitments.

The federation said the move was part of its efforts to ensure the national team continued to compete for major honours.

“2015 African champion with Cote d’Ivoire, Herve Renard returns to lead the Elephants. His task will be to oversee the preparation of the national team and its participation in the next international competitions,” the statement said.

Renard is expected to arrive in the Ivorian capital, Abidjan, in the coming days to begin his duties officially. The federation added that he would be presented to the media and supporters at a news conference, with the date to be announced later.

He replaces Ivorian coach Emerse Fae, whose contract ended on 31 July 2026 after both parties decided not to extend their agreement.

Fae took charge of Cote d’Ivoire during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after the departure of the previous manager. He led the hosts to the trophy and subsequently guided the team to the last 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

Renard now returns to a team with which he already has a strong connection. His 2015 triumph with Cote d’Ivoire remains one of the most significant achievements of his international coaching career.

The French manager was also involved at the 2026 World Cup, where he took charge of Tunisia for two matches. He was appointed on a temporary basis after the departure of Sabri Lamouchi.

Renard’s return gives Cote d’Ivoire a coach who has already delivered its most recent Africa Cup of Nations success, while also bringing extensive experience of international football and previous national-team rebuilds.
