Given Msimango explains decision to join ambitious Stellenbosch FC

New Stellenbosch FC defender Given Msimango says he joined the Cape Winelands club because he believes they have the ambition, structure and quality to return to the heights reached in previous seasons.

Msimango is one of the latest additions to a Stellenbosch squad that has undergone significant change during the current transfer window. Ashley Du Preez has also arrived, while Langelihle Phili moved in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

The defender says the club’s recent achievements, both domestically and in African competition, played a major role in his decision to make the move.

“It feels great to be part of Stellenbosch FC,” Msimango said.

“This is a great environment with good management, fantastic coaching staff, and a team that wants to compete, which are all ingredients you need for success.

“Stellenbosch is an ambitious team that wants to compete and win things. The team recently competed in the CAF Confederation Cup, and I want to compete with the Club at the highest level and try to reach those heights again.

“I want to stay consistent with my performances and try to help the team as much as I can. I’m here to work hard for the Club, and I’ve already received messages of support from our fans, so I hope to be able to make them happy this season.”

Stellenbosch FC had established themselves among the leading sides in South African football before a difficult campaign last season. The team reached consecutive MTN8 finals, although they were beaten by Orlando Pirates in both matches.

Their progress also extended beyond domestic competition. Stellenbosch FC reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup during the 2024/25 campaign, but their run ended with a defeat by Simba SC.

The club then experienced a period of change last season. Steve Barker left his position in December to join Tanzanian giants Simba, while Gavin Hunt took charge and helped stabilise the team.

Msimango now arrives as part of an effort to reshape the squad and help Stellenbosch FC compete for honours again. His comments underline the club’s recent rise as a key reason for choosing the Cape Winelands side, with the defender targeting a return to continental and domestic success.

He also stressed his intention to contribute through consistent performances and hard work rather than simply viewing the transfer as a personal career move.

The defender has already received messages of support from Stellenbosch FC supporters and hopes to repay that backing during the new season.

Msimango’s arrival comes as Stellenbosch FC prepare to continue competing in the Betway Premiership, with the club seeking to rebuild after an unsettled campaign and restore the momentum that took them to two MTN8 finals and the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals.
