Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare scores on Ajax debut and declares: “I’m ready”
Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare announced himself in Ajax colours by scoring on his unofficial debut as the Dutch giants defeated FC Volendam in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.
The 25-year-old forward was introduced with 20 minutes remaining and made an immediate impression, finding the net in the closing stages to cap an encouraging first outing for his new club.
Although it was only a friendly, Arokodare’s late contribution ensured he began life at Ajax on a positive note, providing supporters with an early glimpse of what he can offer in attack.
After the match, the Nigerian reflected on his role in the team and made it clear that he is prepared to contribute in whatever capacity is required.
During his post-match interview, Arokodare was asked about the perception that taller forwards are often labelled as players who make an impact from the bench late in matches.
“When you’re a big guy like you, you’re often called a ‘substitute’. Is that derogatory for you?” Arokodare is asked after the match.
The striker admitted he was unfamiliar with the term before explaining how he views such situations.
“The Nigerian doesn’t know what that means. “A substitute? What’s that? Trying to force the game in the final minutes? That’s what I tried to do today, even though we were already ahead.”
His response reflected a willingness to embrace any responsibility given to him by the coaching staff, regardless of the timing of his introduction.
Arokodare also expressed his satisfaction after getting on the scoresheet and underlined his desire to make a meaningful contribution whenever he is called upon.
“I’m happy to have scored. If I have to come on in the last five or ten minutes to keep possession or force the game, I’m ready. I want to be important for the team,” said the Ajax striker.
The goal rounded off an encouraging first appearance for the Nigerian, who needed only the final 20 minutes to make his mark.
His performance and comments afterwards highlighted both his readiness to seize opportunities and his determination to play an important role for Ajax whenever his chance arrives.
