Mykhailo Mudryk could return to Chelsea squad next season, says Xabi Alonso

Mykhailo Mudryk could be part of Chelsea’s squad for the 2026-27 season after the anti-doping case that kept him out of football since December 2024 was formally concluded, manager Xabi Alonso says.

The Football Association confirmed on Friday that its anti-doping proceedings involving the Ukraine winger had ended, meaning Mudryk is now eligible to resume his career.

The 25-year-old had faced the possibility of a four-year suspension before the case was officially closed.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 2-1 friendly defeat by Tottenham, Alonso said the club was pleased for Mudryk, particularly given the personal impact of the situation.

“We are happy for him, especially for him personally. Maybe we cannot imagine what he has been through during this period,” said the Chelsea manager.

“We want him to be part of the team and he has everyone’s support.”

Alonso acknowledged that Mudryk’s reintegration would not happen immediately, but said the change in circumstances should allow the player to begin making progress towards a return.

“It will take some time, but now that the circumstances have changed, things will start to move. He wants to play football and return to the team, and there is no doubt that what he has been through has been extremely difficult,” he added.

The Spanish manager also highlighted Mudryk’s qualities as an attacking player, recalling his performances for Shakhtar Donetsk.

“I watched him with Shakhtar Donetsk and saw his impact and his great ability in one-on-one situations. He can create many chances for himself. He is a special player, but he needs time,” Alonso said.

Mudryk faces strong competition for a place in Chelsea’s forward line. The squad includes Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens, Geovany Quenda, Morgan Rogers and Nicolas Jackson.

Chelsea will not play in European competition during the 2026-27 season, and Alonso believes that could provide an opportunity for Mudryk to rebuild his fitness and form through carefully managed appearances for the first team.

The manager suggested that a gradual return at Stamford Bridge may be more beneficial than sending the winger out on loan to regain his level elsewhere.

Alonso also confirmed that Mudryk will travel with the Chelsea squad to Hong Kong, where the club will play its next three matches as part of its preparations for the new season.

Mudryk has been absent from competitive football since December 2024 while the anti-doping case was being dealt with. With the proceedings now over, Chelsea will begin the process of bringing him back into first-team training and match involvement, although Alonso stressed that patience would be required.
