Nampalys Mendy returns to France with Metz after Watford exit

FC Metz have confirmed the signing of Senegal international Nampalys Mendy, who joins the club as a free agent following the end of his contract with Watford.

The 34-year-old midfielder has agreed a one-season deal with the Lorraine club, keeping him at Metz until June 2027. His arrival gives the side a significant addition in midfield as they look to recover from relegation and make a swift return to France’s top flight.

Mendy, who won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, is returning to French football after previously playing for RC Lens in 2023. The defensive midfielder will now compete in Ligue 2, bringing considerable experience to a Metz squad seeking to rebuild after a difficult campaign.

He has made 164 appearances in Ligue 1, a record that underlines the level of experience he can offer to a team aiming to challenge for promotion. Metz believe his presence can add greater stability and composure to the centre of the field.

The club were relegated at the end of last season and have made their ambitions clear by moving for a player with extensive experience at the highest level. Mendy’s ability to provide protection in front of the defence is expected to strengthen a midfield that will be central to Metz’s attempt to return to the elite.

According to Transfermarkt, Mendy’s current market value is estimated at 700,000 euros. That figure reflects a player whose influence is based not only on his valuation but also on his experience in Ligue 1 and international football.
