Barcelona eye Tangier trip for pre-season friendly as La Liga opener pushed back

Barcelona are in advanced talks to play a pre-season friendly in Tangier on 15 August, using a rare free weekend created by the postponement of their opening La Liga fixture.

The Catalan club has confirmed it is negotiating the organisation of a match in the Moroccan city against a local side, with only some logistical issues left to resolve before the game can be officially announced.

The proposed date falls on the weekend of the first round of La Liga matches. Barcelona, however, will not feature in that opening set of fixtures after their game against Athletic Bilbao was rescheduled due to several players taking part in the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Flick targets final competitive test

Head coach Hansi Flick and his staff are keen to use the Tangier fixture as one last competitive rehearsal before the start of Barcelona’s season.

Their plan is to sharpen the fitness and match rhythm of the established first-team regulars while continuing to hand opportunities to the many La Masia prospects who have been involved throughout pre-season.

The likely opponents are expected to be Ittihad Tanger, who finished seventh in the Moroccan Botola last season.

If final agreement is reached, the match would be the penultimate stop on Barcelona’s pre-season schedule, coming just before their return to Spain for the traditional Trophee Joan Gamper against Al-Ahly on 19 August.

That schedule would also mean Lamine Yamal is set to feature in a match in the country of his father’s birth, a detail that is expected to carry particular emotional significance for the player and for many supporters.

Pre-season route through England and Italy

Barcelona are currently based at St. George’s Park in England, where they are conducting the main phase of their pre-season preparations.

Once their games on British soil are completed, the team is due to travel to Italy for a triangular tournament on 8 August involving Udinese and Nottingham Forest.

Tangier would then follow as an additional international stop, should the friendly be confirmed, before the squad heads back to Barcelona to conclude preparations with the Gamper match at home.

Strategic move in North Africa

Beyond the sporting considerations, a trip to Tangier would form part of Barcelona’s wider strategy to strengthen their presence in North Africa, a region where the club already enjoys significant popularity.

The choice of Tangier carries a strong symbolic dimension. The city lies directly opposite southern Spain, separated from Tarifa by only around 15 kilometres across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Centuries of shared history, trade and migration have woven tight links between Tangier and Spain, reflected even in the local dialect, which incorporates numerous Spanish influences.

For Barcelona, staging a friendly in Tangier would offer a chance to connect at close quarters with a passionate fanbase in a city long seen as a bridge between Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula.
