Crystal Palace move for Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima collapses over payment terms

Crystal Palace’s attempt to sign FC Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima has collapsed after the Bundesliga club abruptly ended negotiations over the financial structure of the proposed deal.

The Franco-Congolese centre-back had been targeted by the Premier League side as a replacement for Maxence Lacroix, who is expected to leave Crystal Palace imminently. Talks had progressed to the point where a move to England appeared close in recent days.

However, Augsburg have now taken what has been described as a firm and final decision to halt discussions with the London club, according to reporter Florian Plettenberg. The German side broke off contact after the two clubs failed to reach agreement on how the transfer would be paid for.

The negotiations are understood to have stumbled on the schedule of payments and the performance-related add-ons attached to the deal. Crystal Palace are said to have remained rigid in their stance on those points, and Augsburg’s hierarchy opted to terminate talks rather than soften their position.

That refusal by either side to compromise brought negotiations to a definitive standstill. Augsburg’s leadership consider the matter closed and are not planning to return to the table with Crystal Palace.

Augsburg rule out revival of talks

Matsima, 24, was informed on Wednesday that the move was off and is now expected to reintegrate fully into the Augsburg squad. Inside the German club, there is no expectation that discussions with Palace will resume before the end of the transfer window.

Augsburg view the potential switch to the Premier League as finished and do not anticipate any renewed approach from the Eagles. The club’s stance is that the track leading to a transfer to Crystal Palace is now definitively closed.

The defender, who was born in Colombes, remains under contract with Augsburg until the summer of 2030. He is currently valued at €22m and earns an annual salary of €2,260,000, which corresponds to 1,469,000,000 FCFA, in Germany.

With Augsburg unwilling to revisit the terms and Palace having declined to alter their financial proposal, Matsima’s future at least in the short term appears to lie firmly back in the Bundesliga rather than in the Premier League.
