Brazilian sports court hands open-ended suspension to Internacional defender after leg-break challenge

Brazil’s top sports court has imposed a highly unusual open-ended suspension on Internacional defender Vitao, ruling that he cannot play again until Cruzeiro forward Gabriel Pec has recovered sufficiently to return to full training.

The sanction follows one of the season’s most serious injuries, sustained during Internacional’s 2-1 home defeat by Cruzeiro in the 19th round of the Brazilian league. The incident occurred in the 58th minute, when Vitao was shown a straight red card for using excessive force in a challenge on Pec.

After reviewing the case, the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) decided that the defender’s ban would be directly linked to the recovery of the player he injured, rather than to a fixed number of matches.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the STJD’s Sixth Disciplinary Commission ruled that Vitao, who plays for Internacional (commonly known as Inter Porto Alegre), will remain suspended “until Gabriel Pec returns to training with Cruzeiro”, with the suspension capped at a maximum of 180 days.

Leg fracture and surgery

Pec was initially taken off with what appeared to be a deep cut to his leg, but subsequent medical examinations revealed a fracture of the left tibia. The injury required surgery and has ruled the forward out of action for several months.

Members of the commission concluded that the usual range of punishment for violent conduct – between one and six matches – was inadequate given the severity of the injury.

Because the Cruzeiro striker has been left unable to compete, the judges opted to apply an extended measure already available within the regulations: keeping the offending player suspended until the injured opponent is formally cleared to resume normal training activities, up to the 180-day limit.

Under the ruling, Vitao will only be eligible to return once Internacional have official confirmation from Cruzeiro’s medical staff that Pec has gone back to full team training. Medical projections presented to the court suggest that could take around three to four months.

Emotional defence from Vitao

During Tuesday’s hearing, Vitao appeared in person and, in tears, insisted to the panel that he had no desire to harm his opponent.

He told the commission he had spent recent days praying for Pec’s recovery, saying: “I spend the nights awake praying for him. I ask forgiveness with all my heart from all Cruzeiro fans.”

The commission nonetheless upheld the view that the level of force used in the challenge, and the consequences for Pec, justified the exceptional interpretation of the disciplinary code.

Setback for both players and Internacional

The injury has come at a particularly cruel moment in Pec’s career. Cruzeiro had only officially announced his arrival from LA Galaxy on 7 July, and the match in which he suffered the fracture was his first start for the Belo Horizonte club.

For Internacional, the ruling removes an established first-team defender at a delicate stage of the campaign. The Porto Alegre side are 16th in the Brazilian league table, hovering just above the relegation zone, and go into their next fixtures on the back of four consecutive defeats.

With no certainty over the exact date of Pec’s return to training – and therefore over the end of Vitao’s suspension, beyond the 180-day ceiling – the decision is being seen in Brazil as a potentially significant precedent in how football authorities handle serious on-pitch injuries.
