DR Congo coach Desabre explains Cédric Bakambu’s absence from squad

DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has explained his decision to exclude striker Cédric Bakambu from his squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Bakambu’s absence sparked concerns, particularly given his experience and importance to the Leopards.

According to Desabre, Bakambu’s recent move to Major League Soccer side San Diego FC played a key role in his omission.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, September 18, Desabre said the 35-year-old forward was left out of the squad for the qualifiers against Equatorial Guinea and Zimbabwe because he needs time to settle into his new environment following his transfer to the United States.

Bakambu recently completed his move to San Diego FC, and Desabre believes the striker’s immediate priority should be establishing himself at his new club before returning to international duty.

The French coach stressed that Bakambu’s absence does not represent the end of his international career, insisting that the door remains open for the experienced forward to return to the national team.

“Cédric signed for his club late in the day, but the Bakambu era with the national team is not over. It will be up to him to decide whether or not there will be an end to it.

“Settling in at his new club is important, particularly given the current health situation. We have discussed this with him. He needs to adapt to his new club so that he can be ready to play for the national team again in the future.”

Bakambu has been an important figure for DR Congo over the years, bringing considerable experience and attacking quality to the national team. His absence therefore represents a notable change to Desabre’s plans as the Leopards begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON tournament.

DR Congo will face Equatorial Guinea and Zimbabwe in their opening two qualifying fixtures, with Desabre opting to move forward without the veteran striker as he continues his transition to life in the United States.

The decision also gives Bakambu an opportunity to focus fully on his new club and build up his rhythm in MLS before potentially returning to the Leopards for future international assignments.
