Neymar brings Brazil chapter to a close with formal international retirement

Neymar has confirmed his retirement from international football, ending a record‐breaking Brazil career in the wake of the country’s last-16 exit at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 34-year-old Santos forward, who entered the tournament short of full fitness, made only brief appearances in two matches and scored once – a penalty against Norway in the round of 16 – as Brazil’s campaign came to an abrupt halt.

Brazil were eliminated with a 2-1 defeat by Norway, extending the nation’s wait for a sixth world title. The Selecao have not lifted the World Cup since their triumph in 2002.

Neymar was asked at the end of a post-tournament news conference whether he could imagine playing at the 2030 World Cup. He used the question to make clear that his international career is over.

“My adventure with the national team is over. I made history there, and I am extremely happy about that,” he said.

Quoted by French outlet Foot Mercato, he added: “I have gone through many experiences. I gave everything I had, and I always fought for the yellow shirt, but I think I have had enough of that.”

Record-breaking Brazil career

Neymar leaves the international stage as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer. He scored 80 goals in 130 appearances for the national team, surpassing previous marks to stand alone at the top of the Selecao scoring charts.

His decision brings to an end a Brazil career that included appearances at four World Cups. The 2026 tournament in North America was his fourth participation on football’s biggest stage.

Despite his fitness concerns heading into this latest World Cup, Neymar was still selected in Brazil’s squad and remained a central figure off the pitch, even if he was unable to play a major role on it. His limited minutes underlined the physical issues that had raised doubts about his readiness before the competition.

Club future still to be decided

At club level, Neymar’s contract with Santos runs until the end of 2026. No decision has yet been made on his next move after that deal expires.

The forward began his professional career at Santos before moving to Europe and later returning to the Brazilian club. His formal international retirement, however, means his remaining years in the game will now be focused solely on club football.

While Neymar did not specify any future plans beyond his current contract, his announcement confirms that Brazil will go into the next cycle, including qualification for the 2030 World Cup, without the player who has led their scoring charts and carried much of their attacking responsibility for more than a decade.
