Arsenal have effectively abandoned their pursuit of Vinicius Junior after accepting the Brazil forward is likely to commit his future to Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish newspaper Marca says senior figures at the Premier League club are now convinced Vinicius will sign a new contract at the Bernabeu, ending any realistic prospect of luring him to north London in the current transfer window.

Arsenal had emerged as one of the main contenders for the 24-year-old, particularly after Real Madrid signalled a willingness to invest more than €100m in a new winger. That stance was interpreted by interested clubs as a potential opening to test the European champions’ resolve over one of their star attackers.

However, Arsenal are understood to have received no encouragement from the player’s side that he is open to leaving Spain, and have stepped back from the idea of tabling a huge bid in the absence of any sign that Vinicius wants a move.
