Ousmane Diomande non-committal on Sporting CP future after World Cup debut

Ousmane Diomande has refused to confirm whether he will remain at Sporting CP next season, keeping speculation about a potential summer move very much alive after featuring at his first World Cup with Cote d’Ivoire.

The 22-year-old central defender is back in Abidjan on holiday following the tournament and has distanced himself, for now, from the noise surrounding his future in the transfer market.

Diomande was speaking in the Abobo district of the Ivorian capital during a charity initiative in support of several youth academies when he was asked about his next career step.

The Sporting CP player has been heavily linked with a number of clubs across Europe, with particular interest reported from the Premier League and Serie A, but the Ivory Coast international chose not to give any clear indication of his plans.

When pressed on whether he expects to continue at Sporting CP next season, Diomande restricted himself to a brief, cautious reply, refusing to close the door on any outcome.

Focus on recovery before deciding future

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner explained that his main concern at present is recovering physically before returning to pre-season training.

He stressed that he wants to start the new campaign in peak condition so that he can perform at his best, whether that is in the colours of Sporting CP or at a different club.

By underlining that his goal is to be ready “in the best physical condition” regardless of where he plays, Diomande effectively signalled that a transfer during the upcoming window remains a possibility.

The defender’s comments will do little to dampen speculation around a move, especially given the growing number of European sides monitoring his progress.

Long contract but transfer door open

Diomande is under contract with Sporting CP until June 2030, a deal that in theory gives the Portuguese club a strong position in any negotiations.

However, his suggestion that he is prepared to “take on a new challenge” if the right opportunity arises indicates he is open to leaving Lisbon ahead of next season.

The centre-back’s performances at club level and his exposure on the international stage have continued to draw interest from several European teams.

According to Transfermarkt, Diomande is currently valued at €42m, a figure that reflects his rapid rise and the premium placed on young defenders at the top level.

He earns an annual salary of €3,460,000, which equates to 2,249,000,000 FCFA, underlining his status as one of the better-paid Ivorian players in Europe.

While Diomande enjoys his break at home in Cote d’Ivoire, his future remains unresolved, with both Sporting CP and potential suitors likely to face an important decision as the summer transfer window develops.
