Bokang Phiri combines Plymouth scholarship with football ambitions

At 15, South African centre-back Bokang Phiri is building a future in football while continuing his education in the United Kingdom.

Phiri, who turns 16 in October, was awarded a 50% football and college scholarship at Plymouth College earlier this year. He is now studying while developing as a player at Plymouth Argyle International Academy.

His move to the UK followed the submission of videos showing him in action to Ryan Dickson, Director of International Football Academies in the United Kingdom.

“Bokang’s journey started when we submitted videos of him playing football to Ryan Dickson, the Director of International Football Academies in the United Kingdom,” his father, Thato Phiri, told the Siya crew.

“After watching his videos, Ryan was very impressed with Bokang’s ability, his understanding of the game and the way he played.”

Dickson then held an online meeting with the youngster to find out more about him, assess his ability further and understand his ambitions away from football as well as on the pitch.

“Ryan then arranged an online meeting with Bokang so that he could learn more about him, assess him further and understand his ambitions both on and off the football pitch,” Thato said.

“Following the assessment, they were impressed enough to offer Bokang the opportunity to become part of their international football academy programme.”

The programme enabled Phiri to pursue his two main priorities at the same time. International Football Academies has partnerships with colleges in the UK that support international students who want to continue their education while developing as footballers.

Phiri was introduced to Plymouth College and completed an interview process that included a meeting with the Head of the College. He was subsequently accepted, allowing him to continue his studies in England within a structured football academy environment.

His football journey began at the age of four, and his father believes the move represents a significant step towards an ambition Phiri has held since childhood.

Although centre-back is his natural position, his development in the UK has also seen him play in midfield. He has been used as a defensive midfielder and given the opportunity to move forward and support attacks.

That experience is helping him develop an understanding of the game from more than one position and adding another element to his progress as a player.

Phiri’s interests also extend beyond football. He has written three children’s books and has developed a passion for encouraging young people to read, particularly children from underprivileged communities.

For his family, the move to England is therefore about more than football.

“As a parent, it has been an incredible journey to watch,” Thato said.

“It is a reminder that talent, hard work, discipline and faith can open doors that you never imagined.”

However, despite the opportunity he has secured, Thato remains conscious that his son is still only at the beginning of his journey.
