Nigeria’s Flying Eagles overpower Ghana in WAFU B U-20 Championship opener

Defending champions Nigeria dealt a major blow to Ghana’s Black Satellites with a thrilling 4-2 victory on Monday, July 27, 2026, in the opening Group B fixture of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship.

The highly anticipated match, which was moved to the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, saw the Flying Eagles establish early regional dominance over their rivals on Monday.

Nigeria opened the scoring just six minutes into the game through Olayemi Ayinla, but Ghana responded quickly when Mohammed Zaidan found the net in the 21st minute to equalize.

The Flying Eagles reclaimed the lead in the 30th minute courtesy of a Lucky Oraro free-kick, before Abdulmuiz Adeleke converted a penalty five minutes before halftime to give Nigeria a commanding two-goal cushion.

However, Ghana’s hopes of a dramatic comeback were ultimately dashed when Adeleke struck from the spot again late in the second half to secure his brace and seal maximum points for Nigeria.

Despite the opening-day defeat, head coach Maxwell Konadu’s side remains mathematically secure for future continental assignments, as Ghana has already automatically qualified for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations by virtue of being the host nation.
