Al Ahly Keeper Mostafa Shobeir set sights on Confederation Cup title

Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir has expressed confidence in the Egyptian giants’ ability to compete for the CAF Confederation Cup title, insisting the team are determined to fight for every available trophy this season.

Shobeir made the remarks following Al Ahly’s narrow 1-0 victory over Modern Sport in the Egyptian Premier League on Thursday evening, where he produced a crucial late penalty save to help his side secure all three points.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper was pleased with the outcome but acknowledged that Al Ahly still have room for improvement, particularly in their domestic campaign.

Speaking in an interview with ON Sport after the match, Shobeir described the Confederation Cup group as a challenging one but maintained that the club have the ambition and determination to achieve success.

“Al Ahly’s group in the Confederation Cup group stage is strong and respectable, and we will fight to achieve all possible championships this season,” he said.

The goalkeeper also reiterated the team’s commitment to making amends to their supporters for last season’s disappointments, with the players determined to reward their backing by winning the Egyptian Premier League title.

“Thank God for the success and victory in the match. We will try to compensate the fans for the mistakes of last season by winning matches and achieving the league title,” he added.

Shobeir further admitted that the team’s performances in the league need to improve, although he believes there is still enough time for the squad to reach the desired level.

“We acknowledge that the team’s performance needs further improvement, especially in the league championship, and the season is still long,” he noted.

Al Ahly defeated Modern Sport through Omar El-Saai’s 17th-minute header, with Shobeir preserving the lead by saving a penalty in the closing stages.

The victory lifted the Egyptian giants to 20 points, leaving them second in the league standings, one point behind leaders Pyramids FC.
