Chelsea plot shock move for English-Ghanaian striker Danny Welbeck

Chelsea are considering a surprise move for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck as manager Xabi Alonso looks to add more Premier League experience and leadership to his squad.

The 35-year-old striker has emerged as a target for the Blues, with Brighton aware of Chelsea’s interest – The Athletics has reported. Although talks remain at an early stage, there is growing belief among all parties that a potential agreement could be reached.

Welbeck’s profile is understood to appeal strongly to Alonso, who values not only his attacking qualities but also his influence inside the dressing room.

After several transfer windows focused heavily on recruiting young prospects, Chelsea are now exploring options that bring greater experience and immediate Premier League readiness.

Career-best Brighton form puts Welbeck on Chelsea radar

Welbeck enjoyed one of the most productive league campaigns of his career last season, featuring in 37 of Brighton’s 38 Premier League matches and scoring 13 goals.

Since joining the Seagulls from Watford in 2020, the former Manchester United and Arsenal forward has built a strong reputation at the Amex Stadium, finding the net 51 times in 201 appearances for the club.

His consistency and ability to contribute both on and off the pitch have made him an attractive option for Chelsea, who are looking for a more experienced figure to complement their younger attacking options.

The move would represent another indication of Chelsea’s changing recruitment approach after years of prioritising players below the age of 25. The club previously explored a deal for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 34, and have also shown interest in free-agent defender John Stones, 31.

Welbeck arrival could reshape Chelsea’s attacking plans

A possible move for Welbeck is expected to have significant implications for Chelsea’s current striker options.

The club have been assessing the futures of Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha, who recently arrived from Strasbourg after an agreement was reached last September.

Welbeck started his professional career at United, scoring 29 goals in 142 appearances before joining Arsenal in 2014. He later recorded 32 goals in 126 matches during his six-year spell in north London before moving to Watford and eventually Brighton.
