Stellenberg edge Outeniqua in tense King Price Derby thriller to stay on course

Stellenberg survived a major scare from Outeniqua to scrape a 26-21 victory in the King Price Derby Series on Saturday, hanging on in the closing minutes to avoid one of the biggest upsets of the South African schools rugby season.

The visitors, widely fancied to win comfortably, were forced into a frantic rearguard action late on as Outeniqua – known as the Kwaggas – chased a decisive try that would have completed a memorable turnaround in front of their home crowd.

Stellenberg, the Jade Brigade, had appeared set for a routine afternoon after racing into a 12-0 lead inside the opening nine minutes. First, Juvan Burden cut a sharp short line to power over in the fifth minute, before Ethan van Biljon finished off another dominant passage just four minutes later to underline the early superiority of the visitors.

Outeniqua, however, refused to be blown away. A swiftly recycled maul brought them their first try and trimmed the deficit to 12-7, re-energising the home side and their supporters.

Although Daniel Steffen crossed in the 16th minute to push Stellenberg back out to 19-7, the pattern of the contest was beginning to shift. Outeniqua carried with increasing purpose, repeatedly breaking the line and unsettling a Stellenberg defence that had looked comfortable in the early stages.

Their pressure finally told just before the interval. After sustained attack, Matthew Prince surged over to score, cutting the gap to 19-14 and sending the sides into half-time with the match finely poised rather than effectively decided.

Hosts seize second-half initiative

The momentum carried into the second half as Outeniqua took control for a prolonged spell. Their forwards, growing in confidence, pinned Stellenberg in their own territory and forced the favourites into hurried clearances and scrambling defence.

The breakthrough came through second-rower Franco Pienaar, who forced his way over following patient phase play deep in the 22. His effort handed Outeniqua a 21-19 lead and put them on the brink of a statement win against one of the country’s form school sides.

With the Kwaggas dictating territory and tempo, Stellenberg were suddenly the team under pressure, needing a moment of accuracy to steady themselves.

That arrived on 50 minutes. A powerful maul from the Jade Brigade created front-foot ball, and from it Daniel Mongie hit a precise short line to slice through and score. The conversion took Stellenberg back in front at 26-21 – a lead they would not surrender, despite the increasingly frantic nature of the closing stages.

The final minutes were played almost entirely on Stellenberg’s side of halfway as Outeniqua chased what would have been a famous winner. Their ambition nearly paid off with a sweeping long-range attack in the dying moments, only for the visitors’ cover defence to scramble across and shut down the threat.

Stellenberg’s ability to repel that late surge ultimately secured the result, but the manner of the win leaves their coaches with clear work-ons, particularly at scrum time. Outeniqua’s pack applied sustained pressure at the set piece throughout the contest, disrupting Stellenberg’s platform and ensuring the favourites were never able to fully relax.

For Outeniqua, the performance – even in defeat – underlined their capacity to challenge leading schools and push a highly rated Stellenberg outfit far closer than many had predicted.

The Jade Brigade, though, depart with the points and another win in the King Price Derby Series banked, albeit after a far sterner examination than they might have expected at kick-off.
