Kaizer Chiefs edge Scottland FC to clinch Toyota Cup as Mfundo Vilakazi strikes in Rustenburg

Kaizer Chiefs sealed the Toyota Cup for the first time in their history as a composed first-half finish from Mfundo Vilakazi earned a 1-0 win over Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Vilakazi struck in the 17th minute in Rustenburg on Sunday to secure a maiden trophy for new head coach Fernando da Cruz and round off Chiefs’ pre-season with a morale-boosting victory ahead of their Betway Premiership opener next weekend.

Having fallen short in the previous two editions of the Toyota Cup, Amakhosi went into the match determined to avoid another near miss, and they were rewarded in front of an enthusiastic crowd that created a home-like atmosphere for the Soweto side.

The game opened at high tempo, with both teams eager to assert themselves during an entertaining and open first 15 minutes. Chiefs gradually took control and made that spell count when Scottland FC failed to clear a dangerous situation inside their own penalty area.

Vilakazi, one of Chiefs’ most highly regarded young prospects, reacted quickest to the loose ball, gathered it under pressure and calmly slotted beyond the goalkeeper, sparking loud celebrations from the stands.
