Otamendi retires from Argentina duty after World Cup final heartbreak

Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina, bringing to a close a 17-year career with the national team just days after the agonising World Cup 2026 final defeat to Spain.

The 38-year-old confirmed his decision in the early hours of Friday morning, posting a long and emotional farewell message on his Instagram account following Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time loss in Sunday’s final.

Otamendi made his senior debut for the Albiceleste in 2009 and went on to win 139 caps, scoring eight goals. A cornerstone of Argentina’s so‐called golden generation, he helped his country win four major titles, including the landmark triumph at the 2022 World Cup.

Although his status in the pecking order of Argentina’s central defenders had diminished in recent years, he remained an important part of the squad at the 2026 tournament. He featured in seven matches at the World Cup, including the final, where he came on shortly before half-time to replace the injured Lisandro Martinez.

‘The hardest words of my career’

In his farewell statement, Otamendi wrote: “Today, I find myself forced to write the hardest words of my entire career. Since I was a child, my dream was to wear the Argentina shirt, and that was the greatest privilege that football has given me.”

He added, in comments reported by French outlet RMC: “I have defended this shirt with body and soul, with full pride and awareness of what it represents for millions of Argentines. Fate meant that my last match was a World Cup final. We did not get the result we hoped for, but I leave with my head held high, knowing that this group gave everything until the very last second.”

The defender continued: “I say goodbye with the inner peace of someone who did not spare a single drop of sweat. I never held anything back, I never stopped believing, and I always considered wearing this shirt to be the greatest honour of my life.”

Otamendi, who has represented leading clubs such as Benfica, Manchester City, Porto and Valencia, reserved special praise for Argentina’s supporters.

“Thank you to our fans for your unconditional love, for every flag, every chant, every support in good moments and especially in the most difficult periods,” he said. “Thanks to you, every time the national anthem was played we did not feel like just 11 players, but like millions defending one dream.”

Message to the next generation

Otamendi also used his message to address the players who will succeed his generation in the national team.

“To those who will continue to wear this shirt today, I tell you from the bottom of my heart: never stop believing,” he wrote. “There will be heavy blows that seem impossible to overcome, but this shirt always rewards those who defend it with humility, sacrifice and love.

“Keep your heads held high, keep fighting, and do not let any defeat steal your hope. I am convinced that the next chapter of our history belongs to you.”

He closed his statement with a final tribute to his country and the national side that defined his career.

“Today, I say goodbye to the Argentina national team, but I do so with immense pride at having represented my country,” he concluded. “Because titles are written in history, but the love for these colours lasts a lifetime. Thank you, Argentina, thank you for allowing me to fulfil my dream of becoming a world champion and wearing the most beautiful shirt in existence. Farewell to the national team.”

Otamendi’s decision applies only to international football. He will continue his club career after recently joining Argentine giants River Plate.
