Algeria right-back Rafik Belghali sees market value surge 71% after World Cup breakout

Rafik Belghali’s emergence as one of Algeria’s standout performers at the 2026 World Cup has triggered a dramatic 71% rise in his market valuation, despite the Fennecs’ disappointing campaign on their return to the global stage.

Algeria, appearing at a World Cup for the first time in 12 years, failed to live up to expectations, exiting the tournament in the last 16 against Switzerland and leaving a sense of unfinished business around Vladimir Petkovic’s side.

Yet in the midst of that collective frustration, Belghali used the tournament to accelerate his career, turning a long-awaited chance into a compelling audition for Europe’s elite.

From opportunity to breakthrough

Handed the starting right-back role by Petkovic, the Hellas Verona defender seized an opportunity others had been pursuing for several years.

Since the difficulties encountered by Youcef Atal, Algeria had been searching for a reliable long‐term option down the right flank. Belghali ultimately moved ahead of Samir Chergui and Achref Abada in the pecking order, while Mohamed Farsi and Kevin Guitoun were not selected for the World Cup squad.

In a generally underwhelming tournament for the Verts, Belghali was one of the few Algerian players to enhance his reputation. He delivered a particularly eye-catching display against Austria, where his attacking intent was rewarded with an assist, and he was again among Algeria’s better performers in the defeat to Switzerland in the round of 32.

His relentless running, aggression in duels, willingness to drive forward and impressive work-rate drew attention from scouts and analysts alike.

Inter and Roma monitoring

Belghali was already on the radar of several clubs before the World Cup thanks to his performances in Serie A with Verona. His displays in North America have only intensified the interest around him.

Inter Milan, the reigning Italian champions, are understood to view the 23‐year‐old as a credible option to succeed Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid this summer. Belghali’s blend of defensive discipline and forward thrust has been identified as a good fit for the right flank at San Siro.

Roma are also thought to be admirers of his attacking qualities and his suitability to operate as a wing-back in a three-man defence. The Giallorossi had already opened talks with Verona in the build-up to the World Cup, exploring the possibility of bringing him to the Stadio Olimpico.

Transfer value reflects rise in status

The impact of his World Cup has been immediately visible on the market. According to the latest valuation from Transfermarkt, Belghali is now estimated to be worth €12m, up from €7m before the tournament – a jump of 71% that underlines his altered status within both club and international football.

That surge in value mirrors his growing importance for Algeria at a time of transition. With Riyad Mahrez and Aissa Mandi having just announced their retirement from international football, Belghali is emerging as one of the possible new faces of the Fennecs’ next cycle.

Having secured a starting berth under Petkovic, the full-back now appears poised for the next step at club level if Verona decide to cash in on their asset amid interest from Serie A rivals.

The trajectory is all the more striking given that, just 18 months ago, Belghali was still weighing up whether to represent Belgium rather than Algeria. In choosing to back him, Petkovic’s call now looks inspired.
