Klopp to be unveiled as Germany head coach after secret New York talks

Jurgen Klopp will be presented as Germany’s new head coach on Friday morning after a secret meeting in New York sealed his release from Red Bull, according to multiple reports in Germany.

The German Football Association (DFB) has reached a full agreement with Klopp on a contract that will run until the 2030 World Cup, ending his two-year break from management following his departure from Liverpool in the summer of 2024.

Klopp, 59, will succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany’s dramatic exit from the World Cup in the last 32 on penalties against Paraguay.

Agreement reached after Red Bull talks

German broadcaster Sky reports that the DFB and Red Bull have finalised all details of Klopp’s departure from his existing role with the company.

A key breakthrough came during what was described as a “secret” meeting in New York on Saturday, involving Klopp and Red Bull chief executive Oliver Mintzlaff, where the final elements of the deal were agreed.

In an unusual arrangement for an elite international coaching appointment, the DFB will not pay any financial compensation to Red Bull for releasing Klopp from his contract.

Instead, Klopp will remain with Red Bull as a global brand ambassador, a role the company is said to value more highly than a relatively modest buy-out fee.

Salary to top Nagelsmann’s pay

Klopp’s salary with the national team will be slightly higher than Nagelsmann’s reported €7m (£5.9m) per year, Sky says.

The DFB is understood to view the financial package as justified by Klopp’s profile, global appeal and track record at club level, particularly his success with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

The Friday press conference will formally introduce Klopp as the new Bundestrainer and outline his vision for reviving a national team that has struggled at major tournaments in recent years.

Klopp confirms desire to lead Germany

Klopp has publicly admitted his desire to coach the German national team and has indicated that such an appointment was likely to happen.
