Casemiro transfer to Inter Miami under MLS investigation over ‘discovery rights’

Inter Miami’s high-profile capture of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is facing scrutiny, after Major League Soccer (MLS) confirmed it has opened an investigation into the deal over alleged breaches of league recruitment rules.

The 32-year-old joined the Florida club on a free transfer on Wednesday following the expiry of his contract with Manchester United, becoming the latest global star to move to MLS and link up with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

But the move has almost immediately been overshadowed by a formal review from MLS, focused on whether Inter Miami complied with the league’s so‐called “discovery rights” system during negotiations.

MLS confirms formal review

In a statement reported by British newspaper The Sun, MLS said it was examining the circumstances surrounding Casemiro’s transfer.

The governing body has not specified how long the process will take, nor has it suggested what sanctions – if any – could follow. However, it has confirmed that details of the agreement between the clubs will be made public once the inquiry is completed.

What are MLS ‘discovery rights’?

At the heart of the case is the MLS “discovery” mechanism, a league-specific rule that gives individual clubs priority to negotiate with unregistered international players they have formally listed.

Under this system, a team that has filed a “discovery claim” on a player is granted the exclusive right to open talks with him within MLS. Other clubs may not engage in negotiations for that player unless they either:

– acquire those discovery rights from the club that holds them, or – reach a separate financial agreement that compensates that club.

According to the report, LA Galaxy held Casemiro’s discovery rights at the time of his move. That position meant Inter Miami could be required to pay a significant fee to secure the midfielder’s registration within MLS.

The article suggests the amount involved could reach around £750,000, though MLS has not officially confirmed any figures and has stressed that the precise terms will only be disclosed when the investigation is concluded.

Settlement reached but questions remain

Despite the ongoing review, MLS has acknowledged that Inter Miami and LA Galaxy have already agreed a settlement concerning Casemiro’s discovery priority.

The league stated that while a resolution between the clubs is in place, it will not reveal the financial or contractual details until its inquiry into potential “tampering” and rule violations is finished.
