Aissa Mandi: Algeria’s record appearance-maker retires from international football after 13 years

Algeria captain Aissa Mandi, the most-capped player in his country’s history, has announced his retirement from international football after a 13-year career with the Desert Foxes.

The 34-year-old defender confirmed his decision days after Algeria’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup, becoming the second high-profile star to step away from the national team in quick succession following Riyad Mahrez.

Mandi made 123 appearances for Algeria, more than any other player, and was a key figure in the side that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 2019 in Egypt – the nation’s second continental title.

‘Time to say goodbye’

In a lengthy message published on his social media accounts, Mandi spoke emotionally about his decision and the meaning of representing Algeria.

“اللعب للمنتخب الجزايري شيء استثنايي وجميل للغاية، نعيش مشاعر لا توصف. لقد حان الوقت بالنسبة لي لاقول لكم وداعا.

لم اكن اتخيل يوم 10 نوفمبر 2013 انني سارتدي هذا القميص في كل هذا العدد من المباريات. اتمنى انني نجحت في نقل ما يمثله المنتخب الوطني الجزايري الى الجيل الجديد. احب هذا المنتخب كثيرا، وكل مسيرتي كانت موجهة من اجله، وقدمت الكثير من التضحيات ولست نادما على شيء.

عشنا لحظات لا تنسى، مثل النجمة الثانية في كاس افريقيا عام 2019، التي ستبقى محفورة الى الابد في تاريخ بلدنا. من الصعب جدا طي هذه الصفحة، لكنني ارحل مرتاح الضمير، واشعر انني اديت واجبي. مررنا بلحظات صعبة، واكثر ما يجعلني فخرا انني خلال 12 عاما لم اغش ابدا، وهذا امر لا يمكن لاحد ان ينتزعه مني.

The Villarreal and former Real Betis defender underlined that he leaves “with a clear conscience”, insisting that over more than a decade he had “never cheated” and had always tried to embody “respect, hard work and solidarity”.

From debut to history-maker

Mandi made his senior international debut for Algeria in March 2014 in a friendly against Slovenia, a match his side won 2-0.

He went on to represent the Desert Foxes at two World Cups, appearing at Brazil 2014 and again at the 2026 tournament, where his international journey came to an end.

His standout achievement came at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Mandi was part of the defensive unit that helped Algeria clinch their second AFCON crown, a triumph he described as an unforgettable “second star” that would remain etched forever in the country’s history.

Over the course of his international career, he became a mainstay at the heart of Algeria’s defence, often wearing the armband and emerging as one of the team’s most influential leaders on and off the pitch.

Club journey across France and Spain

While bowing out from international duty, Mandi’s club career is set to continue.

The centre-back has joined Spanish side Levante this summer on a two-year contract, returning to La Liga after spells with Real Betis and Villarreal.

Mandi began his professional career at French club Reims, where he came through the youth system before establishing himself in the first team. His performances earned him a move to Real Betis, where he spent five seasons up to the summer of 2021.

He then signed for Villarreal, staying until 2024, before moving back to France with Lille for two campaigns. His latest switch to Levante marks his third club in Spain.

Across his club career to date, Mandi has played 493 matches in all competitions, scoring 26 goals – a notable return for a central defender.

End of an era for Algeria

Mandi’s retirement, following that of Mahrez, signals a changing of the guard for Algeria as a new generation prepares to take over.

In his farewell, he expressed hope that he had successfully passed on what the national team shirt represents to younger players, and thanked supporters “especially those who never abandoned us in difficult moments” for the strength their backing had given him.

For Mandi, the boy who “fulfilled his dream” of representing Algeria, the international chapter is closed – but his legacy as the Desert Foxes’ record appearance-maker is firmly secured.
