Frenkie de Jong–Hansi Flick rift leaves Barcelona future in doubt

Tension between Barcelona coach Hansi Flick and midfielder Frenkie de Jong has escalated to the point that the Dutch international is now looking for a way out of the club, according to a Spanish report.

Trust ‘completely lost’

Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, who specialises in Barcelona news, reported on Wednesday that Flick has “completely lost” faith in De Jong following events at the end of last season.

Romero says the breaking point came in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final, when Barca were knocked out of the competition by Atletico Madrid.

According to his account, Flick had planned to start De Jong in the decisive match after the midfielder was given medical clearance to play. However, the 27-year-old is said to have refused to take the risk, fearing a setback to his fitness.

That disagreement is reported to have caused a serious rupture between coach and player.

Midfielder seeking exit

The relationship between De Jong and Flick has since become “extremely strained”, Romero added, with the former Ajax midfielder now said to be actively considering an exit from the Camp Nou.

De Jong, who joined Barcelona in 2019 and has been a regular in the side through several managerial changes, has previously spoken publicly about his desire to succeed at the Catalan club. But the latest developments suggest his future is now far from secure.

The reported loss of trust from Flick – appointed to lead Barcelona into a new era after Xavi’s departure – raises questions over whether the club will look to move De Jong on, especially amid ongoing financial pressures and the need to reshape the squad.

Serious knee injury complicates future

Compounding the uncertainty is a significant knee injury De Jong suffered while on duty with the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup.

The Barca midfielder is currently weighing up whether to undergo surgery to address the problem. According to the report, he has postponed a final decision as he awaits clarity on how his situation at Barcelona will unfold.

A surgical intervention could rule him out for an extended period, potentially affecting both his club and international commitments, as well as his market value if Barcelona were to consider a sale.

De Jong has long been viewed as one of Barcelona’s most technically gifted midfielders, capable of dictating play from deep and progressing the ball under pressure. Losing him would represent a major shift in the club’s sporting project.
