Egyptian Premier League: New season draw set for early August as 20-team format confirmed

The Egyptian Premier League is set to kick off in mid-August, with the competition’s draw expected to take place in the first week of the month and the league to feature 20 clubs next season.

The Egyptian Professional Clubs Association has settled on an initial date range in early August to conduct the draw for the upcoming league campaign, according to information obtained by FilGoal.com.

The 2026-27 Egyptian Premier League season is then scheduled to begin in the second week of August, leaving clubs with a tight window to finalise their preparations.

Zamalek enter as defending champions

Zamalek will go into the new campaign as title holders, having claimed the league crown last season.

The Cairo giants will be aiming to defend their championship in a competition that will again include some of Egypt’s most storied clubs, with the expanded 20-team format adding extra fixtures and potential pressure on squads.

The confirmation of the league’s starting schedule allows teams across the country to build their pre-season plans, arrange friendlies and conclude transfer business with greater clarity on the calendar.

Clubs Association at the centre of domestic game

The Egyptian Professional Clubs Association, which oversees and organises domestic football competitions, has taken charge of planning for the new season, including setting the draw date and league start.

The body, commonly known as the Clubs Association, has been responsible for managing the Egyptian Premier League and the League Cup since its establishment.

Ahmed Diab has chaired the association since its launch in 2021, during a period of restructuring designed to modernise the administration of the domestic game and give clubs a more direct role in decision-making.

Under Diab’s leadership, the association has handled the organisation of league fixtures, match scheduling and commercial arrangements, as well as coordination with the Egyptian Football Association on broader football matters.

Twenty-team league to shape demanding season

The forthcoming league campaign will feature 20 teams, confirming the continuation of the expanded format that increases the number of matches and raises the stakes of relegation and qualification battles.

A 20-club structure means each side will play 38 league fixtures across the season, creating a demanding schedule when combined with domestic cup competitions and potential continental commitments for leading teams.

The association’s decision to lock in the early-August draw is expected to be followed by the publication of a full fixture list, which will outline key derbies, title clashes and relegation six-pointers throughout the season.

With the start date now broadly set for the second week of August, attention will turn to how clubs reinforce their squads and adjust to the physical and tactical demands of a long campaign in Egypt’s top flight.
