Issa Diop: Morocco defender joins Ipswich Town from Fulham in £8.5m deal

Ipswich Town have bolstered their defence with the signing of Morocco international Issa Diop from Fulham in a deal worth around €10m (£8.5m).

The newly promoted Premier League side confirmed the arrival of the 29-year-old central defender on Wednesday via their official website. Diop has signed a long-term contract at Portman Road, tying him to the Tractor Boys until 30 June 2030.

The move keeps the former West Ham United defender in English football after four seasons at Fulham.

Premier League experience for promoted Ipswich

Standing at 1.94m (6ft 4in), Diop brings significant top-flight experience to Kieran McKenna’s squad, having previously played in the Premier League for both West Ham and Fulham.

Last season, he featured in 13 Premier League matches for Fulham, scoring once for the Cottagers. He also represents Morocco at international level, part of a growing core of experienced players in the national team.

Ipswich, back in the Premier League for the first time in more than two decades, have been seeking to strengthen defensively to cope with the step up in quality. Diop’s aerial strength and composure on the ball are seen as key attributes to help stabilise the back line.

The club will hope his blend of physical presence and top-flight know-how can provide a solid platform as they aim to secure survival in their first season back among England’s elite.

After putting pen to paper, Diop said he was eager to begin the next chapter of his career in Suffolk.

The defender underlined both the significance of the club and the positive discussions held before the move was finalised, indicating he felt convinced Ipswich was the optimal environment for the next phase of his career.

Transfer battle and market value

Diop’s market value is currently estimated at around €8m, according to specialist site Transfermarkt, underlining the scale of Ipswich’s investment as they reshape their squad for the Premier League.

Italian side Como were also keen on signing the centre-back, but Fulham rejected the offer from the Serie B club. Africafoot had previously reported Fulham’s decision to turn down the Italian interest before Ipswich emerged as the more attractive and ultimately successful destination.

The length of Diop’s contract suggests Ipswich view him as a central figure in their medium- to long-term plans, rather than a short-term solution for their first season back in the top flight.

As Ipswich prepare for the campaign ahead, Diop is expected to compete immediately for a starting role at the heart of defence, bringing with him years of Premier League experience and recent World Cup exposure with Morocco.
