Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom seeks career revival with Indonesian club Borneo FC
South African midfielder Njabulo Blom is hoping to revive his career after travelling to Indonesia in search of a contract with top-flight club Borneo FC.
The 25-year-old is currently in the Southeast Asian nation as he looks to secure a fresh start following a difficult spell that has seen him struggle to find a new club after leaving Vietnamese side Thep Xanh Nam Dinh FC.
Blom became a free agent last August when Nam Dinh decided to part ways with both the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder and fellow South African international Percy Tau. Their departures brought an early end to their time in Vietnam and left both players searching for new opportunities.
Following his exit from the Vietnamese champions, Blom returned to South Africa in the hope of reigniting his career in the Betway Premiership. He was linked with a move to Stellenbosch FC, where head coach Gavin Hunt was reportedly keen on a reunion with the midfielder.
Hunt, who previously coached Blom during his time at Kaizer Chiefs, was believed to have played a key role in recommending the player to Stellenbosch. However, despite the existing relationship between the two, the proposed transfer failed to materialise, leaving Blom without a club.
With limited opportunities emerging in South Africa, the versatile midfielder has now shifted his focus back to Asia, where he is aiming to convince Borneo FC that he can strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
The move represents a crucial opportunity for Blom, whose career has stalled in recent months as he continues his search for regular first-team football.
Blom first rose to prominence at Kaizer Chiefs, where he established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest young midfield talents. Renowned for his energy, defensive awareness and ability to play in multiple positions, he quickly became a regular in the Amakhosi first team and earned recognition as one of the country’s most promising players.
His impressive performances eventually earned him a move abroad, joining Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States in what was viewed as a significant step forward in his career. The transfer was expected to accelerate his development and expose him to a new football environment.
After his spell in North America, Blom continued his journey in Asia by signing for Vietnamese club Thep Xanh Nam Dinh FC. However, his stay proved to be short-lived, culminating in his release alongside Percy Tau.
Now, with his playing future still uncertain, the midfielder is determined to make the most of his opportunity in Indonesia. Securing a deal with Borneo FC would not only bring an end to his lengthy search for a new club but also provide him with a platform to rebuild his career and rediscover the form that once made him one of South Africa’s most highly rated young footballers.
As negotiations continue, Blom will be hoping his experience in the South African Premiership, Major League Soccer and Vietnamese football will convince Borneo FC to offer him the chance to begin a new chapter in Indonesia.
