Jean-Michael Seri announces retirement from Ivory Coast after 11 years
Midfielder brings an end to international career after five AFCON tournaments and a World Cup appearance
Jean-Michael Seri has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close an 11-year career with the Ivory Coast national team.
The 34-year-old midfielder confirmed his decision through a message shared on his social media platforms, ending a long spell in which he became one of the country’s most experienced and respected players.
Seri represented the Elephants in five editions of the Africa Cup of Nations and also featured at the FIFA World Cup.
His international career included the memorable AFCON triumph on home soil in 2023, one of the defining achievements of his time in the national team.
A career spanning more than a decade
Over 11 years in the Ivory Coast squad, Seri established himself as a regular presence in midfield and played a role during several significant moments for the national side.
The former OGC Nice and Fulham player became known for his composure on the ball and consistency, helping guide the team through multiple international competitions.
His appearances at five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments reflected his longevity at the highest level of African football, while representing his country at the World Cup marked another milestone in his international journey.
With his retirement announcement, Seri closes a chapter that saw him remain part of the national team’s setup for more than a decade.
Seri thanks teammates and supporters
In announcing his decision, the midfielder expressed gratitude to everyone who had been part of his international career.
“Glory to God. After 11 years with the national team, 5 AFCON tournaments played (one of which was won), and a World Cup appearance, I announce today the end of my international career. Representing Côte d’Ivoire has been an honor and a responsibility that I have always carried with pride. I thank my teammates, the staff, the Federation, and all Ivorians who love and know football, for their trust and support,” he wrote.
The message reflected both appreciation for his journey and pride in representing his country throughout his career.
Attention now turns to club football
While his international career has come to an end, Seri made it clear that he intends to continue playing at club level.
The midfielder said his focus would now shift entirely to the next stage of his professional career.
“Now it’s time to focus on the next stage of my club career, with the same determination. Thank you for everything,” he concluded.
His announcement marks the end of an era for the Ivory Coast national team, with one of its longest-serving midfielders stepping away after more than a decade of international service.
Having represented his country at five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and a FIFA World Cup, Seri leaves the international stage after contributing to some of the most significant moments of his generation, including the nation’s AFCON success on home soil in 2023.
