Ahmed Adel: Egypt goalkeeper calls time on career after leaving Ismaily

Egyptian goalkeeper Ahmed Adel has retired from professional football, bringing an end to his playing career after leaving Ismaily at the age of 39. The experienced shot-stopper, who spent the final years of his career with the Ismailia club, has officially stepped away from the game following a move into retired status.

Adel joined Ismaily in September 2021 on a free transfer from El Gouna, adding top-flight experience and depth to their goalkeeping department. His departure from the club on 16 July 2026 marks the conclusion of a senior career that spanned nearly two decades in Egyptian football.

Standing at 1.89m and favouring his right foot, Adel first emerged at Al Ahly, stepping up from the club’s under-19 side to the senior team in 2007. He went on to be part of one of the most successful eras in the Cairo giants’ history, collecting major honours domestically and on the continent.

During his time with Al Ahly, Adel was involved in squads that won the CAF Champions League twice, in 2007-08 and 2012-13, and lifted the CAF Super Cup on two occasions. He also added a CAF Confederation Cup title in 2013-14, underlining his presence in a team that dominated African competitions.

On the domestic front, Adel’s medal collection includes eight Egyptian league titles, crowned across seasons between 2006-07 and 2017-18, as well as an Egyptian Cup win and two Egyptian Super Cups with Al Ahly. After later spells with El Makasa and El Gouna, his final chapter at Ismaily now closes with his decision to retire.
