Kaizer Chiefs brace for Glody Lilepo exit as AS FAR interest grows
Kaizer Chiefs could be preparing to part ways with one of their standout performers from last season, with reports suggesting winger Glody Lilepo is closing in on a move to North Africa.
The DR Congo international has emerged as a sought-after player following an impressive debut campaign at Naturena, where he established himself as one of Amakhosi’s most influential attacking players.
Lilepo’s consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, with Moroccan giants AS FAR reportedly among the clubs showing serious interest in securing his signature during the current transfer window.
The growing speculation surrounding the winger’s future has intensified after he was left out of Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season camp in Spain. While the club has not officially commented on his absence, reports indicate negotiations are taking place behind the scenes regarding a potential transfer.
Should the move materialise, it would represent a significant departure for Chiefs, who would lose one of their most dangerous attacking outlets ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.
With the possibility of Lilepo leaving becoming increasingly realistic, Chiefs are already working to secure a replacement.
The Soweto giants have stepped up their pursuit of Stellenbosch FC winger Langelihle Phili, who has been identified as a key target to reinforce the club’s attacking options.
However, discussions between the two clubs are understood to be more complex than a straightforward transfer.
Stellenbosch are reportedly demanding a transfer fee in addition to the loan services of Ashley Du Preez before agreeing to release the former AmaZulu winger to Chiefs.
Du Preez has endured a difficult spell at Naturena since arriving from Stellenbosch, struggling to consistently reproduce the form that made him one of the Premier Soccer League’s most exciting forwards.
Last season proved particularly challenging for the pacey attacker, whose performances fell below expectations as he battled for consistency in the Chiefs attack.
A temporary return to his former club is now being viewed as a move that could benefit all parties.
For Stellenbosch, Du Preez would return to an environment where he previously excelled, while the player himself could enjoy regular game time and the opportunity to rebuild his confidence.
Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, would use the deal to facilitate the arrival of Phili, who is regarded as one of South Africa’s most promising attacking talents and a player capable of filling the void should Lilepo complete his move abroad.
Lilepo’s potential departure would mark the end of what has been an impressive spell with Amakhosi. The Congolese winger quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his direct running, creativity and ability to influence matches in the final third.
While no official agreement has yet been announced, indications suggest negotiations are progressing, with North African interest continuing to gather momentum.
If Chiefs are able to finalise the signing of Phili while allowing Lilepo to move to Morocco, it would represent a significant reshaping of their attacking department as the club continues its rebuilding process ahead of the new campaign.
