Aliou Cissé wins FIFA case against Libya FA, awarded €820,000 compensation

Former Senegal national team coach Aliou Cissé has won his legal battle against the Libyan Football Federation, with FIFA ordering the North African association to pay him €820,000 in compensation.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach was appointed as Libya’s head coach in 2025 on a two-year contract after ending his successful tenure with the Senegalese national team, where he guided the Teranga Lions to their first-ever AFCON title.

However, Cissé’s time in charge of the Libyan national team came to an unexpected end less than a year after his appointment, as the two parties parted ways amid disagreements over contractual obligations.

Following his departure, the former Senegal captain lodged a complaint over unpaid wages and financial commitments owed to him under his contract. The dispute eventually reached FIFA, which has now ruled in favour of the 48-year-old tactician.

The world football governing body has instructed the Libyan Football Federation to pay Cissé €820,000 as compensation for the breach of contract.

The decision brings an end to a lengthy standoff between the coach and the Libyan FA, which had been seeking clarity over the financial claims raised by the former African champion.

Despite the setback in Libya, Cissé has quickly secured another major international coaching role. The Senegalese tactician has since been appointed head coach of Angola, where he is expected to use his experience from Senegal and previous international assignments to lead the Palancas Negras into a new era.

Cissé remains one of Africa’s most respected coaches after overseeing Senegal’s rise to continental prominence, winning the 2021 AFCON title and guiding the team to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
